The Chama-to-Antonito route really showcases steam power when pulling the train up a 4 percent grade. At higher altitudes, it gets chilly, so bring a windbreaker.

Well worth the trip. If you go in Oct beware: the cars are not heated and you WILL want to go in the gondola car and you WILL wish you had hats and gloves. Coming out of Antonito, sit on the left.
